Slow Down, Breathe…

As far as I can remember (which honestly isn’t very far because some days I swear I have the memory of Dory), I’ve always had some level of anxiety present in my life. Whether it’s anxiety about being on time, worrying how people perceive me, feeling pressure to perform, or something entirely different, it’s always found a way to be there. It has looked different in every season of my life, but it has remained a constant companion.

Over time, I’ve learned how to live with it, and that’s okay. But this blog isn’t really about my anxiety or my mental health journey. That’s a conversation for another day.

Recently, I came across a video that really struck a chord with me, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. Maybe you’ve seen it too, or at least heard the idea behind it. The message was simple: slow down.

As a society, we’re constantly rushing. We look for the shortest grocery line. We drive a little faster than we probably should. We wash dishes like we’re racing against the clock. We hurry through conversations, meals, and even moments that are meant to be enjoyed. Somewhere along the way, being busy became a badge of honor.

The video challenged that mindset. It reminded me that not everything needs to happen as quickly as possible. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give ourselves is permission to slow down, be present, and simply breathe.

As I’m writing this, it’s summertime. For many people, that means vacations, family trips, and stepping away from the normal routine. Coming soon, I’m taking a vacation of my own, and I’m genuinely looking forward to it.

For me, traveling has never just been about seeing a new place. It’s about creating space. It’s an opportunity to quiet the constant noise in my head, reconnect with myself, spend time in nature, and reset before returning home. My anxiety doesn’t magically disappear, but I notice it softens when I allow myself to step away from the pace of everyday life instead of constantly trying to outrun it.

There is something about stepping onto an airplane that fills me with hope and adventure. The moment I’m on the plane, my mind shifts. The emails, the responsibilities of home, etc. become a little quieter, and a new adventure begins. For a little while, I get to unplug, look out the window, take a deep breath, and simply be present. Those moments remind me that life doesn’t always have to be lived at full speed.

The older I get, the more I realize just how quickly time passes. One minute you’re counting down the days until summer vacation, and the next you’re wondering where the season went. Maybe that’s why slowing down matters so much. It’s not about doing nothing or avoiding responsibility. It’s about giving ourselves permission to truly experience the moments we’re living instead of constantly rushing toward the next one.

So here’s my encouragement to you, and honestly, a reminder to myself too. Slow down, breathe. Put your phone away. Sit on the porch a little longer. Watch the sunset without feeling like you have to be somewhere else. Take your time cleaning dishes. The moments that seem ordinary today often become the memories we treasure tomorrow. Life moves quickly enough on its own. We don’t always have to help it along.
